Mount Apo, Philippines

It’s summertime and if your searching for the most adventurous and memorable summer you want, it might be climbing the mountains of Mount Apo.

Mount Apo is a large solfataric potentially active stratovolcano on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, at altitude 2,954 metres (9,692 ft). It is the highest mountain in the country and overlooks Davao City-40 km northeast, Digos City-25 km southeast, and Kidapawan City-20 kilometres (12 mi) west. Its name means “ancestor”. Apo is flat-topped, with three peaks, and is capped by a 500-metre-wide (1,600 ft) volcanic crater containing a small crater lake. It is a source of geothermal energy, but the date of its most recent eruption is unknown, and none are verified in historical times.

Mount Apo is one of the most popular climbing destinations in the Philippines, and the summit is easy to reach. The first recorded climb was on October 10, 1880, by a party led by Don Joaquin Rajal.

Here are some exclusive snap shots of the mount apo activities…

Statue of David, Davao City

Last month I was with a company of friends and were invited in a monthly celebrated birthday of the daughter of one of my officemates. It was 5 pm traffic was somehow moderate to heavy here in davao city depending of the road situation. From downtown proper to catalunan pequeño passing through mc arthur highway it will takes us 1 hour or more to get there. One of my colleagues suggested the idea to pass by to matina aplaya road at the back of SM and visit the Statue of David replica since the dinner will start at 7 pm .

me and the statue

When we get there i park the vehicle, take a walk with them and take a some pictures at the park.

Statue with my officemates

Statue of David Replica was one of the tourist attractions in Davao City. Built by the one who owned Queenland Hotel just a few meters beside the statue. Some five years ago this place was putting up some controversy over the statue in which it was erected in a public property but now it was known all over as a tourist spot. Davao City people call this place baywalk or seawall.

Aside from the david of statue replica we’ve seen a nice view of the ocean, the little mermaid statue, the dolphins statue, the shark aquarium just around the statue, the small zoo and some nice benches to sit back and relax on this place.

A little information, David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504. The statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude. Unlike previous depictions of David which portray the hero after his victory over Goliath, Michelangelo chose to represent David before the fight contemplating the battle yet to come. It came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Florentine Republic, an independent city state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici themselves. This interpretation was also encouraged by the original setting of the sculpture outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence. The completed sculpture was unveiled on 8 September, 1504.

Dela Mar Resort, Timoga Cold Springs, Iligan City

It’s the 2nd day of our velez-acub reunion and it will be held at Timoga Cold Springs in Iligan City, Timoga Cold Springs is located at Brgy. Buru-un just 9 kilometers in Iligan City proper. There are 5 cold springs in the area and only one source, the Maria Cristina Falls, the famous waterfalls and tourist spots in the Philippines.

Large Olympic Size Swimming Pool

One of 5 cold springs just located in the highway the popular one is Dela Mar Resort just beside the Macapagal Ancestral House, Entrance fee of this resort is only 50 pesos per person. Upon entering the resort you notice a swimming pool area but don’t be discourage it was one of the many swimming pools in the area then my cousins tell us to climb the stairs coz we reserved a cottage on the top, we climb step by step until we reach at the top of the resort and upon reaching there I was really facinated by thier large olympic size pool that has a 4 to 5 feet deep, a pool area for diving in which it has a deep of 16 feet, there’s also a kiddie pool area for 1 – 3 years old and a children pool complete with slides and flowing water.

Kiddie Pool Area

Diving Pool it has 16 ft. deep

Childrens Pool

The place was very refreshing and the water is so cold,  since its saturday one of the organizers of our reunion said we should came here early as 7:00 am, since we reserve some cottages we expect that any hour in a day the place will get crowded, and by 11:00 am the place was crowded while i’m snapping some pictures in it.

Fresh Flowing Water

Anyway our reunion went well and memorable, but on the afternoon something unfortunate incident happened but the situation is controllable.

Monastery of the Transfiguration, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon

Last May 2010 we’re attending the 3rd Grand Reunion of our Velez-Acub clan at Misamis Oriental, where all excited for this trip, with my siblings and cousins we hired a luxurious van for free the Toyota Hi Ace Super Grandia with captain seats and TV video, nice van.

Monastery of the Transfiguration

While traversing the highways of bukidnon, my cousin would like to visit the famous Monastery of the Transfiguration in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, for me i heard about this place which is build by the benedictine monks and where one of the famous personalities of a political clan from davao city had thier wedding held there, so it’s a nice thing to visit and explore the place.

Pyramid shape chapel

From the highway to the chapel it takes us maybe 5 to 7 minutes to get there, and when we where there i was amazed of the pyramid shape form of a roof structure and that was the chapel itself. The place was solemn, clean, the air is cold, a really nice place for meditation. There’s a prayer room, where mostly travelers came over this place to pray.

Love this pic

After praying a few meters from the chapel is the store and a souvenir shop, where they sell various figurines, rosaries, bibles, prayer books, tshirts and foods like the Monks Peanut butter, piniato, roasted peanuts and thier famous Monks blend coffee.

The Monastery is truly an ideal place for group spiritual activity such as retreats and recollections.

D’Japanese Tunnel Family Resort and Restaurant, Matina Balusong, Davao City

Japanese Tunnel

Last april was the high graduation of my 2nd degree cousin kakay, we want to treat and celebrate with her parents on her graduation day. There are two alternatives where we celebrate either at the Jack Ridge or at the D’Japanese Tunnel Restuarant, since the road going to Jack Ridge that time is so Slippery because of the melting candles from the devotees during holy week, then we decided to celebrate it to D’Japanese tunnel, i considered this location nearer in our place in GSIS, Matina, Davao City.

The swimming pool area

D’Japanese Tunnel is one of the most historical landmarks in davao city, the place is the tourist attration of itself because of the 300 meters or more tunnel constructed during the World War II Japanese era 1942.

Today the tunnel is guided by the installed lighting, that will be led by the tourist guide to several steps where you will see the various weaponry, water banker, and offices of the Japanese soldiers. Also, there are several chapels there, including one where a copy of the Golden Buddha can be seen. As you go deeper into the Japanese Tunnel, you will come upon vintage machine guns, bombs, explosives and plenty of ammo and bullets at an entrance fee of 50 pesos per person. The owners also turn the place into family resort , they built a restaurant, a swimming pool and a 9 rooms hotel as of the time we visited the place has a 3 storey hotel room is under construction. This make a place a very friendly and a nice location itself.

D'Japanese Tunnel Restaurant Menu
